The white space

The data nobody measures

One thing nobody measures: the time between a manager saying "we need to recruit" and a candidate sitting in a first interview.

That time lives spread out across inboxes, LinkedIn projects, calendars and spreadsheets. Nobody sees it. Nobody measures it. But every recruiter I have talked to describes it the same way: the fog in your head. It is not the hours that drain the most energy. It is keeping track of where things live.

This is the white space of the recruitment process — the part your ATS does not cover, because the ATS starts when a candidate enters an active process. Most of the work happens before that. And it is where it hurts the most.

Two kinds of data

Everybody talks about becoming more data-driven. But when most people say "data", they mean subject-matter data: contact details, candidates in the pipeline, number of interviews, time-to-hire. That kind of data describes what is happening.

There is another kind — usage data — that shows how it happens. How fast someone goes from match to contact. Which roles always take longer. Which hiring managers create friction at the start of a process.

During a trial period with one customer, I saw this clearly. They wanted to measure the same things they had always measured, even though the platform could show entirely new patterns. When we started looking at usage data, we discovered that certain roles — all connected to one specific manager — consistently took longer to source.

It turned out not to be a technical problem, but a collaboration problem. The recruiters needed to coach that manager and work closer together at the start of each process. That insight was never going to come from their old metrics.

Too much of the wrong data

Too much data is not the problem. Too much of the wrong data is. When we measure what we have always measured, we only see what we have always seen. Data should help us understand why something happens — not just what happened.

That is why we built Artemis for exactly this white space: everything from the role brief to the booked interview in one place — the searches, the candidates, the messages, and the data about how it all moves. When a recruiter leaves, the warm candidate relationships stay with the team instead of walking out the door in a private inbox.

If the white space between your role brief and your booked interviews could be measured — what would you want it to show you?
