Why we built Artemis

By Maryam Engelbrecht, Founder & CEO · 22 September 2026 · 4 min read

I have gone from engineering roles at companies like Ericsson and Scania, to leadership roles where I learned from the best while finding my own style of leading, to working with leadership teams, HR management and talent acquisition. Somewhere along the way I counted: I have been involved in more than 250 recruitments, first as a hiring manager, over the years moving towards the TA side.

When I started focusing on Artemis, I needed to put words on why. It comes down to this: helping people realise their full potential, by letting them focus their energy on the tasks that make them love their jobs. With Artemis, I get to do exactly that for people in TA — and I love it.

What we kept manual, on purpose

AI and automation have already moved into our everyday work. Not as a promise about the future — as a practical reality. That does something to our roles whether we want it to or not.

For me it comes down to one thing: being brutally clear about which parts of the job actually require a human — and which parts have just stayed manual out of habit.

In Artemis, two moments are deliberately manual. The selection of which candidates to contact. And the reply, when a candidate answers. Those are the two places where recruiters tell us the human is the profession — where judgment, context and trust get built. Everything around them — the searching, the ranking, the keeping-track — is automated, with the reasoning behind every match visible so you can question it.

The repetitive work that eats time without creating value should not be romanticised. It should be automated away. But the human moments should not be automated just because they can be.

More human meetings is not a slogan

When I say Artemis exists for more human meetings, I do not mean softer meetings. I mean meetings where people do what people do best: interpret context, create clarity, build trust, ask the questions that change direction, and make it clear why a candidate is a good match.

This is not a technology question. It is an identity question: what should your organisation be genuinely, humanly great at? Which moments lose their power if a machine does them? And which moments become better, faster and fairer if we let go?

We are engineers and data people — and we built Artemis because we believe software can enable radically better experiences for candidates, employers and recruiters. AI is not here to replace the human. It is here to force us to take responsibility for what our time is actually for.
